It took me one full day to make it work with frustration while with my level I was planning on complex use for it (I am waiting for "Due" from US distributor as I have advanced plans for automotive use - engine control. In general excellent product and idea, but it needs to mature its software and documentation to be usable by its target buyers - non-computer programmers/robot builders. but in this case I can easily go to Atmel page and tell exact number and spec of the microcontroller used. That was technique used in '80 to hide from praying eyes what electronics was used so to avoid copying. I also do not understand why Arduino factory erases number from that Atmel 328 ARM controller.

but I am on the level of mentoring young engineers who just graduated from college and go into programming business - not for a teenager who wants to build some robot toy as it should be the case (I repeat I know how to build this hardware with periferals and how to program it regardless if it is C, C++, assembly language and then Java with it's RXTX native library for programming serial communication in Java). Notorious foolishness by developers that Java stack dump helps is also missunderstanding. It is not as good for entry user because you need to understand much more about operating systems and how to deal with some of those issues.

Also menus are not helpful as there is no documentation what those programmers listed mean.įor an entry controller programmer the Arduino would be excellent except that hassle you need to go to make it work reliably and not to have it frozen. As a software engineer for 21 years and originally electronics designer, I think that one day I will take source code of Arduino and fix it to work properly. Well somehow mine does not hang and if there is a problem you can simply kill the app, but with Arduino the background process simply refuses cooperation with operating system (Mac OS X) so you have to kill entire application and hope for the best that that "avrdude" dies with some miracle. The issue with software is simply attributed to poor programming by developers in Java. which I was industrial design and programming engineer in ' architecture using advanced Philips, Intel and Atmel (I still have software to progam those and monitor in Java that simply works better than the one downloaded from Arduino).

I am writing this as way before Arduino showed on the market I designed such a board with some peripherals called now "shields" for my own projects and based on 8051 architecture (it was 2001). That's plainly documentation flaw where people may not know that USB based programming is conflicting with your USB program, but that is inherent problem of single USB/RS-232/Serial communication dual purpose. The board actually is cabable of reseting itself and if you are stuck on bad program you wrote then keep that push button on board for 10 seconds and let it lose what it was doing wrong.

Even without driver the board seems to receive something (blniking diodes), but then it dies. You need simply to go to: download and install.

The module works but nobody mentioned that under Mac OS X you need FTDI driver for USB to be installed to avoid error that indicates that board does not respond to upload.
